Rhipicephalus sanguineus (brown dog tick) - dorsal view of female. When fully engorged the female tick is 12 mm long and blue-grey to reddish. This 3 host hard tick has brown legs, short non-salient palps, hexagonal basis capitulum, eyes and festoons, bifid first coxae and the anal groove behind anus. The main host is dog but occasionally infests humans. Heavy infestations on dogs causes worry, irritation and loss of vitality. It may transmit Q fever to man.
